They don't need you. They allow you.

The barn cats of Steampunk Farms did not ask to be rescued. They did not ask for veterinary care, warm sleeping spots, or reliable meals. They did not ask for anything, because cats do not ask. Cats arrive. Cats assess. Cats decide whether you are worth tolerating.

Around forty of them work this property. Most show up on the big porch for feed and sun cuddles. The feral ones — the ones you only ever catch in glimpses — haunt the hay barn and the pig barn, where they eradicated the rodents that used to chew the pigs' feet at night. On stormy evenings they congregate on the porch or disappear into the straw bales in the hay shed. The placed ones live everywhere from small cabins in the high backcountry to horse farms and barns across the mountains from Sunshine Summit to Julian.
