Biggest Winter Storm of 2019 - Our Rescue Pigs Prepare

The biggest winter storm in years is barreling toward our mountaintop sanctuary, and our rescue pigs have gone into full preparation mode.
Seven to twelve inches of snow in one day — that's more than we've seen since we started rescuing animals up here. The weather forecast has the whole county talking, but our pigs? They're not worried. They're busy.
Jute has been methodically arranging her bedding, pushing straw into perfect piles like she's engineering the world's coziest fort. She knows what she's doing — pot belly pigs are surprisingly practical when it comes to comfort and warmth.
Meanwhile, Sylvester is doing what Sylvester does best: making sure his wallow situation is exactly right before the storm hits. He's been tipping his water bowls with extra authority lately, his way of telling us the mud-to-water ratio needs to be perfect for post-storm wallowing.
The bonded siblings Tashi and Hiro have turned house preparation into a team sport. One pushes straw while the other arranges it, working together with the kind of synchronized efficiency that only comes from being inseparable since birth. They've created what can only be described as a pig fortress.
It's remarkable watching them get ready — these animals who came from situations where they couldn't control their environment now carefully crafting their own comfort and safety. They know this is their home. They know these shelters are theirs to arrange however feels right.
The storm will pass, but watching our rescue pigs take charge of their own preparation reminds us why sanctuary work matters. Every animal deserves a safe place to weather whatever comes next.
From all of us at the barn, where Jute just gave her bedding one final, satisfied push.
